Survival in the Zone is not easy, and each day brings fresh challenges as comrades die and supplies diminish. Avoid detection with stealth takedowns or engage in open armed. Danger lurks in every corner. No playthrough is the same. Like your choices, the story is in your hands. Choose wisely whether to trust your comrades or not, use resources for survival or research, and confront conflicts or evade them. The future is up to you Chernobylite is as beautiful as it advertises. Each map is rendered to photorealistic detail and the developers have even ventured into the Exclusion Zone to scan real-world locations. The story has a few twists and turns, but the entire package is held back by shallow repetitive gameplay. The setting is the real draw but don’t expect parallels between the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. This game is more a fetch-and-collect with a heavy emphasis on stealth with a little gunplay (which can be avoided usually). Open-world is also a misnomer, as you are limited to a small but beautiful collection of maps and your dingy warehouse where you retire every evening. You will accidently go to the same area twice in a row and find it deserted of resources, yet still have to plow on through whatever the objective (get medicine, ammo, etc.
Combat is a joke, with most encounters having simple AI and being bulletsponges. They sense you through floors and it is impossible to stealthy kill anyone, as you cannot carry the bodies and it takes so long to take them down. Killing anything hurts your pysche but according to gameplay mechanics, killing a squad of guards is nothing some vodka cannot wipe away from your conscious. Crafting is collecting mushrooms, scrap, and various others to create items at your base. The base may look nice in screenshots but has no life in it. No one sits in the chairs, the TV and radio never play, and your companions just stand around awkwardly waiting for you to speak to them — there is no life. Chernobylite is a pretty game and the story is decent but not worth the time rinse-and-repeating the same maps, creeping around the same bushes, and listening to the same drab voice-overs as you easily predict the ‘twists’. The developers did an amazing job recreating the setting but fell short creating a game to go along with it
