Hidden Deep is a 2D action & exploration sci-fi thriller set in a mining and research facility – more than a mile under the ocean floor. A group of researchers detected strange anomalies of unknown nature and organized an expedition to examine the mysterious phenomenon. Suddenly, after 681 days, contact with the researchers breaks off. You are the leader of the second team: Go down there, find out what happened, rescue anybody who is alive. The first 9 or 10 levels have some amount of voice acting in them for the Mission Control, but for some reason they just kinda… stop? Maybe they couldn’t get the VA back in or something.
Long Version: The story mode “Expedition” is a series of (currently) linear levels that mainly involve traversing around the area, killing grotesque monsters, and sometimes a puzzle or two with the engineers. It took me 8.6 hours to do all the levels on medium difficulty, and despite dying more than a few times, I never lost all my lives and failed the level, so there’s challenge to be had. The “Exploration and mapping of unknown caves” vibe the trailers give off isn’t quite genuine since there is a very set way to continue in every level. HOWEVER, the Challenge Modes fit a bit more closely. Randomized seeds with different objective types, co-op, sprawling levels, etc. I got more enjoyment from the Expedition mode, but if you wanna go all “The Descent” style and go spelunking, the option is there and it’s good. The main draw for me was the atmosphere. It’s tense, the music is unnerving, and the look and sounds of the creatures you fight are pretty damn gross. Despite taking place in a caverns and underground facilities, the levels felt varied enough that nothing was a direct copy and paste, and I was pretty much on edge the whole ride.
