Making a scary game is very difficult, and making a scary cooperative game is almost impossible. But Phasmophobia, released late last year and developed by just one person, is well on its way to becoming one of the best scary multiplayer titles of all time. As it has done so many times in recent years, independent game development has shown that you don’t need endless money and hundreds of people to make a memorable title. With a good idea, a lot of creativity and a lot of perseverance, it is still possible to produce a record-breaking title. Phasmophobia is a horror game with up to four-player co-operative mode, where the goal is to explore a haunted location. But before you think of Bill Murray and his team of ghostbusters, I must cool your spirits: this title takes a much more subdued and darker approach. Once you arrive at your mission location in your truck, which doubles as a command bridge, you’re soon given your mission: your primary mission is always to determine what type of ghost you’re dealing with, and you’re also given three randomly generated objectives to complete. The already overwhelming atmosphere in the first few hours of the material is only heightened by the fact that we don’t really know what the hell we’re supposed to be doing. We’ll get, and later use the money we earn from completing missions to buy, a pallet of items that we can use to supposedly contact the otherworldly being, as well as a good deal of equipment and household practices (salt!) to track its movements. However, we will have to find out how these work, with some help from our notes, which can be called up at any time. In the first few hours, you should expect a high heart rate and a few scary moments, as you will feel lost among the random ghosts, unknown paths and means, and missions will end in death more than once. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend trying to figure out the game on your own, and only as a last resort to outside help. One of the basic essences of the game is to get to know the features and the maps, and even the scariest moments are related to them, so it can be detrimental to the experience if you go into the adventure fully prepared. Phasmophobia is basically a horror-themed detective adventure game, where you have to solve the same mystery of what kind of ghost you’re dealing with from the evidence you’ve collected. As it’s quite random and there are quite a few ghost types, the tracks are often replayable as the circumstances are always changing. The artificial intelligence of the ghosts is well written, as they really do behave erratically and have quite a few scary surprises in their repertoire. As well as jamming lights and tampering with objects, they can scare the living daylights out of a team with weaker nerves just by popping up randomly, but they can also cause some distinctly memorable (read: bad dreaming) moments using interaction objects. While I don’t want to make any jokes, I should definitely mention voice recognition as a basic feature of the game. Phasmophobia listens in on you the whole time you’re playing, and you’ll certainly need to communicate with the afterlife to summon some ghosts. You can even get answers to your questions by talking into the radio, which can create some surprisingly exciting situations. It can be quite paralyzing when, after a long attempt to answer the question “Where are you?”, a monotone male voice on the radio answers “Behind you!” while crouching in a dark nursery. It’s moments like these that make the title truly awesome, and its unique features will make these moments long remembered. The temperament of the otherworldly characters in the game varies quite a bit, so you may encounter an attacking ghost almost immediately, but you may also complete the mission without any serious ghouls. As there are no weapons, it’s worth hiding from the horror in the same way as in Amnesia. Phasmophobia is currently available in Early Access on Steam for just under €12, but if you’re a bit of a horror fan and have some brave friends, it’s definitely worth a look. As I wrote above, the initial chaos adds a lot to the experience, so after 15-20 hours of play, once you’ve worked out the unique features, the title becomes less intimidating. There aren’t many tracks, but they’re varied enough, and the developer frequently throws in new locations – most recently, for example, a prison complex. That said, updates and improvements to the title are still coming frequently, so I’m optimistic that we’ll see something new after the excellent basic idea and its implementation.
