Explore a dark world brimming with hidden mysteries, master a diverse combat system, and inhabit the dual forces of two sisters in a coming-of-age dark fantasy story with fast-paced action, vicious enemies, and spectacular boss fights. The weakest aspects here are the level design and the camera. The levels are really repetitive and can go on too long. There are platforming sequences but these are lackluster, as the camera is often so far away that you might not be able to see what you’re doing, which also extends to when the camera takes a distant vantage point during combat. The camera in general doesn’t feel up to modern standards, as it’s hard to lock onto who you want when the area’s crowded and the camera loves to whip around randomly or have other enemies or walls obstruct your view. It’s messy. As for performance, the game often runs very badly even on good hardware. I often got framedrops into the 40s. If you use Vsync, the game will lock cutscenes at 30 fps, but gameplay was bizarrely unaffected for me. I don’t recall any crashes, though. Soulstice is a decently long experience, as it took me about 15 hours. It’ll take more if you want to conquer the higher difficulties or track down all the upgrades and challenges. I also have no idea how to do the synergy attacks, as the game doesn’t teach you. The help menu sort of explains it, but I never got it to work. Still, this is a pretty good game. It’s not nearly on the same level as Assault Spy but the guy who made that is amazing.
Soulstice isn’t close to as good as Devil May Cry, but you almost certainly weren’t expecting it to be, as that would be insanely unfair. You’d expect the best thing about the game to be the combat, but it’s actually the story that has the most oomph. There’s a lot of attention to the narrative here and, truth be told, it’s one of the best stories I’ve seen in an action game that wasn’t made by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The combat is the second best thing here and it does provide what I was looking for in a character action game. The wbeapons are fast and mostly pretty fun and switching between them is seamless. But you can only change out one of your equipped weapons, not both, which is a waste. The MC always has her basic sword on her and there’s no good reason you can’t swap that for something else. It significantly limits how much you’ll be able to mix and match your attacks. The ghost girl attached to the MC is a unique touch, as she helps out and basically hands most of the game’s parries. As you unlock new moves for her, she uses more and more of her essence, which makes it much easier for her to overload herself, which causes her to vanish. This can get a little annoying, as can the Ikaruga-esque nature of switching between red and blue alignments to damage specific enemies, especially when forgetting the alignment is active can cause you to overload. The enemies are varied and mostly fun to fight, although certain red enemies have blue ghost enemies leave their bodies when you beat them, which requires you to kill the ghosts or have the red enemies heal and get back into the fight. The balance of the Holy Kingdom of Keidas is compromised when powerful, feral creatures known as “Wraiths” invade from the other side of the Veil, threatening to consume the living. Wraiths corrupt their victims and can even possess their bodies, turning into unstoppable monsters that prey upon the common folk. The “Chimeras”, hybrid warriors born of the union of two souls, are the only ones who can protect humankind.
Briar and Lute are two sisters who have been reborn as a Chimera. The transformation has granted Briar superhuman strength and resilience, while Lute, sacrificed to bind her soul to her sister’s, has become a shade with mystical powers. Voiced by Stefanie Joosten (Metal Gear Solid 5), Briar and Lute are sent on a mission to reclaim a city in ruins that has been ravaged by the Wraiths, only to discover that the Order they belong to has a far more complex plan in mind.
